Bryan Narendorf, Ph.D.

My primary areas of interest are creative writing (poetry), the history of American poetry, and the theory and practice of literary translation.

I believe that all poems are formal. This means that in the creative writing classroom most of our work focuses on technique, on those formal elements (line, sound, image) that go into to making poems “poetic.” I hope that students come out of my classroom with ways to think actively about both the poems that they read and the poems they write. To read a poem is to read not just for what it says, but how it says.
