It’s a full circle moment for Stephen Jiwanmall. He graduated from La Salle University in 2012, majoring in communication. Ten years later, he’s back at the Communication Center as an assistant professor, teaching journalism, public relations, and video production.
Stephen brings a decade of professional experience to La Salle, specifically in multimedia journalism and public relations. After graduating from La Salle, he earned a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism the following year. He has reported in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, and Georgia, in print, TV, radio, and digital platforms. After eight years in journalism, Stephen transitioned to public relations as the first Director of Communications and Marketing at Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Prior to teaching at La Salle, Stephen has been a professional video journalism mentor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania since the fall of 2021, working with the staff of its student newspaper The Brown and White. He has also served a public speaking coach at Roseland Academy (FL) for several years.
Stephen has been published in Brown Girl Magazine, the Morning Call (PA), and the Gay Journal (PA). He has also been a guest lecturer at Lafayette College (PA) and Oberlin College (OH).
Stephen has been actively involved in professional organizations, including the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA), and NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists. He is also an active member of Desi Rainbow Parents & Allies, an international nonprofit that provides resources and community for LGBTQ+ South Asians.
