Boren Scholarships are which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined.

Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Rotary Foundation
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide a flat grant of US$25,000 for one academic year of study in another country. These awards are intended to help defray costs associated with round-trip transportation, tuition and other fees, room and board, and some educational supplies. They are the most common type of Ambassadorial Scholarships.
Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships help fund two years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of $12,500 is provided each year.
Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships help finance either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country. They provide a flat grant of $12,000 for three months and $17,000 for six months. Funds are intended to offset costs associated with round-trip transportation, language training, and homestay living arrangements. Applications are considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish.
Freeman-ASIA Awards
Institute of International Education (IIE)
Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. Freeman-ASIA Award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities.

AMIDEAST Education Abroad Need-Based Scholarship
AMIDEAST Education Abroad Need-Based Scholarships will be made in the form of a program fee reduction and average between $500 and $1000 for summer programs, and between $500 and $2,000 for semester and academic-year programs. In exceptional circumstances, awards of up to $2000 may be made for summer programs, and up to $5000 for semester and academic-year programs. Funding is available only to participants on AMIDEAST Education Abroad Programs in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Oman.

John L. Carey Scholarship Program
The AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship program provides financial assistance to liberal arts degree holders pursuing graduate studies in accounting and the CPA designation. These awards are intended to encourage students with little or no previous accounting education to consider professional accounting careers. $5,000 per recipient for one year. The award is renewable for an additional year of study provided satisfactory scholastic progress is maintained. The award will be sent directly to the school for credit to the account of the student.
AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship Program
The AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship program provides financial assistance to students who are currently majoring in accounting, finance, or information systems. These awards are intended to encourage students to consider careers in accounting and business.$2,500 per recipient for one year. The award will be sent directly to the school for credit to the account of the student.
Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students
This program provides awards to outstanding minority students to encourage their selection of accounting as a major and their ultimate entry into the profession. Funding is provided by the AICPA Foundation, with contributions from the New Jersey Society of CPAs and Robert Half International. For two decades, this program has provided over $12 million in scholarships to approximately 1,600 accounting scholars.

Basically, the award is for $2000, and a new scholarship is posted immediately after the current scholarship closes (approximately every three months); this ultimately means that a scholarship will always be available to your students. The scholarship is also unlike most conventional scholarships because we judge applicants based off of their innovation and reasoning. I wanted to take a new/fresh approach to financial aid, and allow students to be creative while expressing a compelling and well-substantiated argument. The questions can be seen at the bottom of the page, but a sample question (pulled off of our current scholarship) is:
1) You are being sent abroad to accomplish a great task (can fall outside of the realm of academia). What have you been sent to do, and why is this significant to you and/or mankind?
Some additional notes about the scholarship: it is a general study abroad scholarship – not program specific, and I do not impose a minimum timeframe for the student’s length of travel.

Carpe Diem Foundation Scholarship
This merit-based scholarship is awarded to college students currently in their freshman, sophomore, or junior year who have demonstrated outstanding achievements, exceptional leadership ability and a serious commitment to community service. Grants of $2,500-5,000 per year are awarded and may be used for tuition, room and board, books, or other academic expenses. This award is not specifically for study abroad but may be used for that purpose if the student is attending a program sponsored by an accredited U.S. university. Fulbright Grants
Fulbright grants enable students of all disciplines to undertake one year of study and/or research at the graduate level in over 100 countries around the world. Full study/research grants, travel grants, and teaching assistantship grants are available. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have their bachelor degree by the time the program begins; language proficiency is required for certain countries. The Garden Club of America Summer Scholarships for Environmental Studies
The mission of GCA is, in part, to protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and actions in the field of conservation and civic improvement. GCA offers various scholarships to encourage studies and careers in the environmental field. These awards are not specifically for study abroad but may be used for that purpose. Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad on summer programs equal to or greater than 28 days in length. Award amounts will vary with the average award for a summer program being $3,000. To be eligible for the summer scholarship, students must be majoring in a science, technology, engineering or math field and must be receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year undergraduate college or university. Applicants are not required to study a STEM subject while abroad to be eligible for the scholarship. This congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education. Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship
The IIPP Fellowship program provides students with specially designed education and training experiences critical to entry and advancement in international affairs careers. Students are recruited from across the nation and apply as sophomores to participate in a multi-year sequence of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, and graduate study, complemented by career development services along the way. To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must be sophomore students, enrolled full-time at a four-year (baccalaureate) institution; U.S. citizens or permanent residents (documentary support required); have a minimum 3.2 grade point average (on 4.0-scale); have a strong interest in international affairs; and be an underrepresented minority. Boren Scholarships- National Security Education Program (NSEP)
The NSEP awards scholarships to U.S. students for study of world regions and languages critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East). Ideal candidates for the Boren are students of political science, government, critical languages, international studies, military science, or international business, although students of other social sciences, health sciences, and certain other fields are also encouraged to apply. Students who plan to pursue a career in the government are natural candidates since all recipients of Boren scholarships incur a service requirement within an agency of the federal government with national security responsibilities. NSEP gives preference to applicants who intend to study abroad for a full academic year. Summer-only programs or 8 weeks or more are limited to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors. The maximum scholarship award for one semester is $10,000 ($8,000 for summer). The English-Speaking Union Travel Grant
The Cincinnati Branch of the English-Speaking Union provides stipends of up to $2,000 to qualified undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty, and others involved in academic pursuits with the goal of promoting education and understanding among the English-speaking peoples of the world. St. Andrew’s Society Scholarship
The St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia awards five $17,000 scholarships annually to sophomore students from local universities to spend their junior year studying at one of four Scottish universities. Applicants should be in their sophomore year and possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average. Students from most disciplines may apply; the credits earned during the junior year in Scotland will apply to the Temple University degree. A Temple faculty committee interviews candidates. One Temple student is then nominated to compete with approximately 15 students nominated from other universities for the five scholarships. Application Deadline: February 8.

Society of the Sons of St. George Scholarship
The Society of the Sons of St. George provides scholarship money for students who will attend a university in England, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2, can show English ancestry and reside in Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks, or Chester counties in Pennsylvania or Camden, Burlington, or Gloucester counties in New Jersey. CIEE Robert B. Bailey Scholarship
The Robert B. Bailey Scholarship is intended to promote the participation in CIEE’s International Study Programs of individuals or members of groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in study abroad, especially ethnic minority students. The award, usually made in the amount of $500, is only available to CIEE Study Center applicants who are U.S. citizens and self-identify as belonging to an underrepresented group in the Personal Statement essay. Awards are applied toward the applicant’s CIEE program fee. Application Deadlines: April 1 for summer, fall, and academic year; November 1 for spring. IES (Institute for the International Education of Students)
IES offers many need- and merit-based scholarship opportunities. Additional scholarships are available for students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
